People started to live in Akabanedai housing complex in 1962. It was a big urban housing complex in the early days of post-war Japan. At that time, it was a very advanced housing project. However, now most of the residents are old, also some of them are living alone. This is a social problem in Japan, but really stands out in big housing complexes like Akabane.
We started to research the relationship between their apartments and their way of living . In this process, we thought we should research it though participating in their daily activities.
And then we established Akabanedai Plus which is a group which is made up of graduate students from JWU and University of Tokyo. Twice a month, Akabanedai Plus holds a community café in a meeting room. In the summer festival, they hold a children’s corner and help the older members of the self-government association. Through these activities, students obtain much important information for our research.
